Expired Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) remains effective

As of April 1, 2016, the current version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification expired. Specifically, the form’s OMB control number (1615-0047) expired on March 31, 2016.

However, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the version of Form I-9 currently available on the USCIS website remains effective until further notice. USCIS instructed employers to continue using that version for the verification of newly hired employees’ identity and authorization to work in the United States.

USCIS most recently revised its Employment Eligibility Verification form on October, 20, 2015, and suggested several modifications to it in an effort to prevent employers and employees from making errors when completing the form. The public was already given 60 days to comment on the recommended changes. USCIS has modified the proposed form by taking into consideration the feedback it received. At present, USCIS is accepting further comments from the public until April 27, 2016.
