Immigrant Visa Applicants from Mexico Now Require Police Certificates

Applicants for immigrant visas (IV) should be aware the police certificates will now be required for all applicants ages 18 years or older.  The reciprocity schedule has been updated to reflect that police certificate is required for any IV applicant who is:

 

  1. Over the age of 18; and
  2. Has resided in Mexico for more than 6 months since the age of 18.

The new requirement applies to IV cases that are currently in process, or will be in process, at the National Visa Center (NVC) in the following ways:

  • Effective March 6, 2017, cases that begin processing must submit a Mexican police certificate for any applicant that meets the above-stated conditions.
  • For cases that were already in process when the reciprocity schedule was updated, the NVC will qualify the case and schedule an appointment without requesting the Mexican police certificate. The NVC will send the applicant a letter advising them to bring the appropriate police certificate at the time of the interview.  Applicants in this category are advised to prepare for their visa interviews accordingly.
  • For cases that were qualified at the NVC before the reciprocity schedule was updated and the NVC has scheduled the interview appointment case and sent the case to the corresponding consular section for interview, the consular officer may request a police certificate at the time of the interview. Applicants in this category are advised to prepare for their visa interviews accordingly.
